It’s one of the windiest places in Europe, and surfers, electro-weather experimentalists and other wind-seekers flock to the Canary Islands for the strong breezes, abundant sunshine, and volcanic idiosyncrasies that life on these windswept archipelagos dotting of the Atlantic have to offer.
Some also come for the wines.
The Orotava Valley is in the northern part of the island of Tenerife. It measures six miles wide to almost seven miles in length and stretches from the north coast at an elevation of 2,000 feet. The valley is bordered by two steep escarpments to the west and east; respectively the Ladera de Tigaiga and the Ladera de Santa Ursula. The valley is named for La Orotava, the largest town in the area. This is the major production zone for wines that are labeled.
The vineyards are mostly planted to the Listan Negro grape; the black-skinned version of the Palomino grape (Listán Blanco) that is used in the production of Sherry Most vines are pre-phylloxera on original rootstock—some up to 200 years in age—and growing as rangy bushes.
With these odd-ball indigenous varieties, the Canary Islands is becoming known as an “arthouse producer,’ and the potential is potent indeed: As far as red wine is concerned, the Canary Islands are producing examples that have moved their worth to the front of the line starting in 2016.
One of these producers is Suertes del Marques, who are leading the way in mindfully farming and production. It is a family winery that has been producing wines since 2006 however, their tradition as winegrowers dates back twenty years in growing and selling their grapes to other wineries in the Appellation Valle de La Orotava.
All facets of production, from harvest to vinification are performed by hand. The vineyards are farmed organically and only treated with natural products when conditions warrant. Only indigenous yeasts are employed, racking is avoided and only the barest minimum of Sulphur is used so the wines are produced with as little intervention as possible.
